It's been a wild year for the crypto game with some real surprises in the mix.
At the start of the year, who would have thought that tap-to-earn — a very slick riff on the play-to-earn model — would be the biggest story of the year? And who would have thought that we would end the year with a huge crypto game making serious compromises with major players?
That's just the tip of the iceberg for the interesting twists we've seen this year, so with 2025 right around the corner, here are seven games that have literally spelled it out over the past 12 months. Stay tuned as DecryptGG continues to report on the next big games to shake up this exciting space.
Notecoin may have taken obvious inspiration from early “clicker” games like Cookie Click, but it undoubtedly spawned the Telegram tap-to-get craze—and rightly so.
Billions of dollars worth of crypto (at NOT high value) were eventually given away to players, creating many clones in the process. None of them lived up to their initial impact, although some eventually envisioned more players, but that shouldn't diminish Notcoin's massive impact.
Off the grid
It's no surprise that Gigi's pick for Game of the Year 2024 is on this list, and when it comes to pure gameplay, nothing comes close. Off the Grid offers a solid riff on the classic battle royale shooter game of Apex Legends or Call of Duty Warzone, adding interesting twists like cybernetic legs that offer special abilities.
That led to many viral moments when the game launched in early October—but what many players may not realize is that blockchain exists behind the scenes, with the upcoming token launch and tradable item NFTs sure to change the narrative around the game.
Pixels
Social farming game Pixel got little attention when it moved to Ethereum gaming network Ronin in late 2023, but Brock became a crypto hit earlier this year when it launched the PIXEL token, offering huge rewards to early players.
Pixels isn't finished after the crypto funds are awarded, but the game is still expanding and evolving, with developers like Pixel Dungeons and an early access Telegram game – and more updates to keep players moving forward as developers explore spin-off games.
Hamster Kombat
For a short time this summer, Hamster Kombat quickly became one of the most talked about games on the planet, the Telegram tap-to-get game attracting 300 million total players.
By allowing players to run their own crypto exchange, it has reached a much larger audience than NotCoin. However, many players consider the airdrop to be low, and the planned second season of the game is still MIA.
Virtual high
Fantasy Top felt like the hottest thing in all of crypto for about two weeks earlier this year, at least for those immersed in Crypto Twitter. Built like an NFT fantasy sports game around real Twitter influencers, Fantasy Top on Ethereum Layer-2 network Blast was a roaring engagement machine for that short time. Buzz died down relatively quickly, but with new funding recently raised, we're excited to see if Fantasy Top can regain its momentum.
Parallel
Parallels was GG's choice for last year's top crypto game, but 2024 is about to start making big strides with players. This year, Parallels entered open beta, launched to a wider audience on the Epic Games Store, and showcased its esports series with a major championship set for Las Vegas in March 2025.
And for the cherry on top, legendary F1 driver Fernando Alonso has endorsed the game. It's still one of the best blockchain games you can play, and it seems to be growing.
Crypto: The Game
Crypto: The Game is actually a game built around crypto, but it's not a video game – well, mostly. It's a multimedia experience inspired by the television show “Survivor,” combining real-world and online events and mini-video games, not to mention social activity.
The first two seasons aired earlier this year and have been widely hailed by many gamers as some of the most exciting things they've ever experienced in the industry. After being acquired by Uniswap Labs, the upcoming third season aims to be bigger and better, maintaining the exciting momentum of its first efforts.
