Los Angeles-based video game developer Space Nation announced on Wednesday that it will tap generative AI for its upcoming flagship game, Space Nation Online, a massively multiplayer online game that will give players a personalized experience.
In the year Founded in 2019 by game industry veterans Jerome Wu and Tony Tang, Space Nation is backed by “Stargate,” “2012” and “Independence Day” filmmaker Roland Emmerich and media entrepreneur Marco Weber.
“Our newly revealed AI integration is much more than a technological advancement – it redefines how personal narratives are created in the MMORPG universe,” Wu said in a statement. Wu serves as co-founder and CEO of Space Nation.
Using AI, Space Nation can create stories that resonate with players as they progress through the game, Wu said.
SpaceNation did not provide further details on the AI model it uses, but the company said its large language model uses “moral training data.”
Despite cautions about the use of AI, Space Nation says that the main plot elements are created by a dedicated and human team of writers.
In addition to a personalized AI experience, the developers say Space Nation Online will feature a worker system mechanic that allows players to manage a group of characters with unique abilities, traits, and roles.
“Over time, these crew members will grow and improve as they are shaped by their experience in the field,” the team said. This flexibility allows players to not only manage their crew, but also actively develop their individual stories and skills through various missions.
By adding the Web3 element, Space Nation says every team member a player picks up during the game will be connected to a player-owned digital asset, or NFT. Community members can expect other perks, including airdrops, the company added.
“The sophisticated Web3-based token economy and the game's AI components make it an experience like no other,” Space Nation said. “The closest any entertainment product has come to living up to the visionary ideals of Ernst Klein and Ray Kurzweil.”
Space Nation Online is set to begin testing AI integration on Discord this month in preparation for a beta launch in March. Space Nation is scheduled to officially launch in 2024.
