Apple has reportedly partnered with OpenAI to develop AI features for the iPhone
Apple is reportedly looking for a major technology partner to help boost its artificial intelligence (AI) offerings.
According to a report from Bloomberg citing multiple sources, Apple and OpenAI are deep in discussions regarding the further integration of generative AI technologies on iOS.
However, previous reports suggest that Apple is still shopping around with Google as another potential cloud partner.
Apple artificial intelligence
The Cupertino company's AI ambitions seem to have been thwarted in the past few years. In 2024, when Apple's once walled-garden approach to AI development seemed to indicate it might have some secret tricks up its sleeve, the company's flagship iPhone is starting to show signs of lagging behind its AI-first competitors.
In May 2022, marking the transition from internal development to external partnerships, Ian Goodfellow, often referred to as the “GANfather” for his contributions to the field of AI, stepped down as director of machine learning when Apple returned to the office. Policy.
Creative AI
In the time since Goodfellow's departure, Apple has been busy in the field of AI. The company recently released a total of eight, open source, large language models, complete with code and training logs.
While this indicates a continued commitment to AI and machine learning, it is unlikely that any of the released models are competitive with closed models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
Market capitalization
As such, Apple may be trying to finalize its generative AI partnership ahead of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
The WWDC event is a typical showcase for the company's biggest and most impactful products, and so far 2024 has been a relatively quiet year for Apple.
Meanwhile, the company's biggest competitor, Microsoft, has partnered with AI industry leader OpenAI for a virtual license to print money. Microsoft currently holds the lead as the world's most valuable company by market capitalization with a total value of $3.019 trillion followed by Apple in second place with $2.614 trillion.
