Asi Alliance Calls For Decentralized Cloud Infrastructure In Ai Development

The Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (ASI) recently released a statement at X on the role of cloud infrastructure in developing decentralized and artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The ASI Alliance believes that centralized cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure create multiple vulnerabilities, including the risk of a single failure.

In a Q&A with Cointelegraph, Humayun Shaikh, CEO of Fetch.ai and chairman of the ASI Alliance, explained that centralized cloud structures are “vulnerable to cyber attacks or disruptions.”

“By decentralizing the cloud, data and control are distributed across independent nodes, ensuring that if one node fails, the entire system is secure and functional. […] and reduces the potential for catastrophic failures.

Disadvantages of a decentralized cloud system

Although Shaikh posits that decentralization is beneficial in terms of resilience and security, he also acknowledges the obstacles to its establishment.

“Decentralized clouds face several challenges, including technical complexity, scalability, and coordination between distributed nodes. Managing data across multiple independent nodes introduces challenges to ensure consistent performance, data integrity, and synchronization.”

He said the nature of decentralized networks and the lack of “centralized control” led to “problems of control and governance”.

“[This makes] Enforcing standards and ensuring compliance with legal and data protection regulations is difficult.

Innovation and fairness in decentralization

The ACI Alliance highlights the implications of decentralization for democratizing access to computing resources, reducing barriers for small businesses and developers, and reducing the dominance of centralized cloud providers.

According to Sheikh, the distribution of “data and computing power on independent nodes” will promote competition and “new AI technologies”.

“This democratized access encourages innovation, allowing businesses to compete on a level playing field.”

Vitalik pushes decentralized cities

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his vision for a city built on the principles of decentralization, democracy and capitalism.

Posting on the decentralized social media platform Farcaster, Buterin commented on whether cities should be public benefit or for-profit institutions.

“We want public infrastructure to work well for all income levels,” he said, adding that “one-way bus tickets to other cities” should not be a “solution” to homelessness.
