ToggleWeb3 game executives in the next X Factor moment
George Esichos, lead contributor at blockchain gaming complex Game7, said: “Justifying investment will continue to be a challenge until we find the new ‘Axie' moment, a new disruptive use case.
Speaking to the magazine, Esichos points out that making a game like Axie Infinity is a challenge because of the mysterious X that resonates so widely. At its peak in 2021, Axie Infinity boasted over 2.8 million daily active users.
“Web 3's exciting games seem to combine the best of traditional gaming with the new benefits of blockchain. It's not just about the technology – it's about how it enriches gameplay and makes your community play a bigger role.
As a key player in a blockchain gaming industry development company with support and education, Esichos must stay abreast of all the latest releases.
So who better to make some predictions about which games have a chance to be contenders for a new Axe moment?
He explained that his focus is not on competitive play, but rather on the level of excitement that a title source can bring to the gaming space.
“I don't think we need a different kind of game; We need an affordable business and tokenization model that can bring more capital and gaming companies into the Web3 gaming space, he explains.
One upcoming title that may have a shot at doing so is the highly anticipated futuristic space-themed strategy game Star Atlas, which Isichos said he's looking forward to.
The in-game token, ATLAS, has a market cap of $63.1 million.
The highly anticipated game using the Solana blockchain will be released in bits and pieces over the next several years.
The blockchain-based social role-playing game Pirate Nation also makes it to the list of Esichos contenders.
The game is powered by Proof of Play, the same team that developed the mega-popular game FarmVille. In September 2023, the group raised $33 million for Pirate Nation from investment giants Andreessen Horowitz and Greenaux Capital.
If Esichos finds some room for more competitors, he's definitely considering NFT MMORPG Otherside, backed by gaming industry heavyweights Yuga Labs.
Oh, and of course, the top choice for every Web3 exec in 2024 is the first-person shooter game Shrapnel. Developed by Neon Machine, the studio boasts talent from major franchises such as Halo, Call of Duty, and Destiny.
Isichos is excited to see big players from the traditional gaming industry getting into blockchain gaming and believes it will open the door for more traditional players to join the fun.
I'm equally interested in exploring how the mainstream and crypto gaming communities respond to new Web3 projects by established studios like Ubisoft, CCP Games, and Wemade.
Ether recipe for hit game
Paul Thind, CRO at Aethir – which is working on decentralized cloud infrastructure for gaming and AI – says the recipe for developing a hit game for a magazine comes down to four essentials.
Successful Web3 games often share key elements: strong product and tokonomic design, strong community engagement, and innovative game design. These factors seem to be a recipe for creating a favorite among players,” he says.
Like Isichos, Tind hopes that as traditional gaming giants continue to throw money into Web3 gaming, we could be on the verge of the next big hit in the industry.
“Continued investment in blockchain games by industry investors such as Ubisoft, Zynga and Square Enix makes the future bright.”
Big names, empty game: Unstoppable Domains X The Sandbox
Web3 domain provider introduces static domains with sandboxing, personalization of digital items and….. “non-stop experience”.
It claims to be the first live competition with the Web3 brand in the metaverse. TB, when you read the description, the game doesn't sound that exciting.
“The experience features a live multiplayer game where up to four players compete by drawing the many tiles in the MetaCube with avatars.”
But the idea of taking digital identity to the next level in the blockchain gaming space is something worth stepping back.
A “GamerTag” is essentially a blockchain digital ID for your wallet that holds game achievements and digital assets that you can carry across various platforms. It will be a property for sale on its own.
In the old days (and still today) when you switched from Xbox to PlayStation, you'd find that the gamertag you've been using on Xbox for a decade isn't even available on PlayStation because your mates were on it. And with your successes, you're back somewhere.

More permanent and transferable digital identities have been a popular talking point for Web3 players in recent times.
Most recently, Sky Mavis dropped the news that players will be able to create their own gamertags on the Ronin Network by ditching the Ronin Name Service (RNS).
Hot Take: Nine Chronicles Mobile
If you want a game that doesn't require you to be glued to the screen, something you can play all day in slow motion, and don't mind grinding a little to get to the fun stuff in the first 30 minutes, then the new mobile version of Nine Chronicles might be your go-to.
Nine Chronicles is the OG of fully decentralized online RPGs. It launched on PC in October 2020, and released a mobile version late last year.
But, further ahead, if you haven't given the PC version a shot yet, it's an idle RPG, which is a subgenre of RPG games designed for a more hands-on and automated gaming experience.
You can decide on your character's armor and weapons, and then the computer will handle all the fighting on your behalf.
So don't expect to spend a lot of time playing the game… in the game (sounds weird, I know).
Nine Chronicles is a bit of a slow burn. Being an idle RPG, the game moves forward with little input from you, the player.
It is basically a game that tests your strategy and management skills.
The first half hour of playing this game is a bit much, to be honest. You start off in campaign mode, working your way up to level 15, which is when you finally jump into the Arena – where you battle other players online.
The problem wasn't a problem, it was getting through 15 stages of the campaign before finally being able to see some action.
Throughout the first 15 levels of the campaign, I didn't need to adjust my weapon or armor. I just hit “Next Step” and let it do the rest of my behavior.
Once you finally unlock the arena and start battling other players, you choose your weapons and armor… and the rest is still out of your hands.

You're watching the computer do all the heavy lifting. It's a bit like watching a boxer enter the ring as a manager. I had to resist the urge to tap the screen.
It's the kind of game you can sneak in during office hours, day in and day out. At the end of the year, you'll have some impressive stats to brag about to your gaming colleagues at the Christmas party.
However, if you're playing the PC version and thinking you can transfer your assets to master the mobile game, sorry for just giving you a four-year head start, but that's not the case.
The mobile game runs on its own mainnet libplanet, and its own chain called Heimdall runs parallel to the Odin chain on the PC version.
Planetarium says this will help ensure a clean surface and fair ground for all players on the mobile version.
Since you're planning to bring mobile gamers to Web3, you don't want to let them down from the start by pitting them against players with years of experience.
As you can probably tell, idle games aren't really my thing. While I enjoy playing the FIFA soccer game on Xbox, the idle version of managing a team in Football Manager just didn't click with me. I prefer to be more involved in a game and don't find the appeal of going down by hand off.

The game seems to be popular among the gaming community. Dapradar recently included it in their list of top 15 mobile blockchain games. Meanwhile, the PC version ranks 14th on Dapradar's Top Blockchain Games list by volume in the last 24 hours, with a total of 53,966 transactions during this period.
