Binance founder CZ must remain in the US until his February sentencing, according to a judge’s order
Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, if allowed to travel to the United Arab Emirates, is unlikely to return home and must remain in the United States until February 8, a federal judge has ruled.
On December 7, Seattle District Court Judge Richard Jones ordered Zhao to stay in the US until February 23, 2024 for sentencing. He faces up to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to the money laundering charge on November 21.
Judge Jones agreed with earlier arguments by federal prosecutors that “the defendant has a lot of wealth and assets abroad that have nothing to do with the United States.” Back to America
“His family lives in the UAE and appears to support his position in the UAE. In these circumstances, the court finds that the defendant has not presented clear and convincing evidence that he would not be able to emigrate if he returned to the UAE.” ” he added.
“For the foregoing reasons, the court grants the government's plea and the defendant remains in the continental United States during the period between the plea and sentencing.”
This is a developing story, and more information will be added as it becomes available.
