Google Search has stopped showing price charts for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in its search results. Users can still access these charts through Google Finance.
Over the weekend, Twitter users announced that searching for the price of Bitcoin would not return a chart in the search results. Conversely, stock price searches still produce charts.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Decrypt.
Google's decision prompted discussions about the reasons for this change. Interestingly, as of press time, searching for “DOGE” still shows Dogecoin's price chart. The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) address balance feature is still active.
Previously, Google provided charts showing the current prices of leading cryptocurrencies, allowing users to check their prices without going to another platform. This feature allowed users to see real-time or real-time price charts for Bitcoin in search results.
Separately, Google Trends data shows that search volume for “Bitcoin” on Google hit a one-year low during the week of October 13-19, 2024. By the end of the week, demand for the word had dropped to 27. % of peak search volume recorded between March 3rd and 9th.
Interest in Bitcoin exploration is high in El Salvador, which will be the first in the world to accept BTC as legal tender in 2021, but has failed to see widespread adoption. Subsequently, Nigeria is a country where inflation has skyrocketed and crypto has been seen as a means of capital flight, which has led to action against local authorities and dire consequences for local exchanges.
Ethereum shows a similar trend, with data from October 13-19 showing an annual low of just 19% with peak search volume between March 3 and 9. Search interest driven by St. Helena is very different from Bitcoin. In Switzerland and Slovenia.
