Bitcoin support coming soon to MetaMask: Report

Self-custodial Wallet MetaMask Plans Bitcoin Integration Soon: Report

MetaMask, a leading self-protecting wallet, plans to integrate support for Bitcoin (BTC). Known for its dominance in the Ethereum ecosystem, this move could make MetaMask more attractive to a wider crypto audience.

The integration aligns with the broader trend of interoperability in the blockchain space, providing a more versatile and user-friendly experience for crypto enthusiasts.

Although the exact timeline is uncertain, sources suggest that users may see Bitcoin functionality within the next month. Initially features may be limited and expanded over time.

“We're excited about MetaMask's commitment to embracing the multi-chain world and continuously researching new integrated features to improve the usability and security of our self-sustaining wallet. While we can't confirm any timelines for specific developments at this time, we're always innovating to better serve our users. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to share more.” A MetaMask spokesperson said.

Currently, MetaMask does not provide direct support for the Bitcoin blockchain. Users wishing to make Bitcoin-related transactions in MetaMask must use Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), the ERC-20 standard token that represents Bitcoin on the Ethereum blockchain, or use MetaMask's feature—Snaps.

In September 2023, BeInCrypto announced the launch of MetaMask Snaps. This feature allows users to integrate applications with non-native blockchains and tokens, including Bitcoin.

While Snaps allows users to manage their BTC within the MetaMask interface, developers must first configure and understand Bitcoin. So, having native Bitcoin support makes the process much easier for users.

MetaMask is also popular with non-exploding token (NFT) fans. Therefore, the integration of Metamask with Bitcoin is expected to facilitate users' standard storage.

Tokens are made up of satoshis (the smallest unit of bitcoin) and consist of unique data such as text, images or other digital assets. This basically mirrors the NFTs adaptation of Bitcoin.

If MetaMask's integration with Bitcoin is successful, it could enhance the experience of Ordinals holders. Huanse, an active member of the Bitcoin casual community, expressed his excitement about this news.

“I don't care what you think about MetaMask, they are the wallet with the most active users in the world. Send up the Ordinal and Runes,” they wrote.

In conclusion, MetaMask's integration with Bitcoin can provide a more comprehensive and user-friendly experience, making it a leading self-sustaining wallet.
