Brazil To Roll Out Blockchain-Based Digital Id

The government recently announced that more than 214 million Brazilians will soon use blockchain technology for digital identification.

Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Paraná will be the first states to issue ID documents on-chain through a private blockchain developed by Cerpro, Brazil's national data processing service. The entire country should be able to issue ID documents using blockchain technology by November 6, the September 25 decree read.

Serpro President Alexander Amorim said blockchain's immutability and decentralization make it the technology of choice for the country's digital identity project.

“Blockchain technology provides Brazilian citizens with a more secure digital experience by protecting personal information and preventing fraud. Using the b-Cadastros blockchain platform will greatly increase the security and reliability of the national ID card project.”

According to local governments, the national ID project is critical to targeting organized crime and allowing government sectors to work together, providing easier access to services and streamlining administrative records. A similar initiative was recently announced in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to allow residents to access ID documents through digital wallets.

In the past few years, Brazil has been working to unify the issuance of identity cards in about 30 states. The new technology will enable secure data exchange between federal revenue and government agencies, the announcement said.

Another significant development in the country is the upcoming Central Bank Digital Currency (CBCC). The government released more information about the project in August, renaming the digital currency to Drex.

According to previous reports, the central bank plans to expand the business of the tokenization system in connection with Drex. Drake's code was developed to allow the central authority to freeze funds or reduce balances, a local developer said.
