When you chat with a chatbot, there are things you want it to remember and things you want it to forget. ChatGPT creator OpenAI has you covered, the popular generative AI tool is announcing a new feature that gives it the ability to “remember” information for future conversations.
OpenAI said in a blog post on Tuesday: “We're testing the ability for ChatGPIT to remember things you discuss to make future conversations more helpful.” “You're in control of chatgpt's memory.”
The new memory feature will roll out to select Chat GPT Free and Plus subscribers this week, he said, with a wider rollout to come at an undisclosed time.
The memory feature is OpenAI's latest attempt to create a personalized AI experience. Last summer, ChatGPT's developer introduced “custom guidelines” that let users customize the responses they receive from the chatbot.
According to OpenAI, users who want to use the memory feature can turn it on in their account settings under Personalization. OpenAI says users can tell ChatGPT to forget what's in memory or delete specific memories.
You can tell the OpenAI spokesperson to remember something, ask it what it remembers, and explicitly tell it to forget through chat or settings. “You can also turn it off completely. We're introducing ‘temporary chat' for when you need it without using memory.”
Custom GPT applications can use the new in-memory feature with OpenAI, allowing developers to turn the feature on for users. OpenAI says users' memories are not shared with developers.
While GPT builders don't have memory capabilities, OpenAI says the company can use content provided to ChatGPT, including memories, to improve its models—but it says users can turn this off in settings.
“Memory brings additional privacy and security issues, such as what information needs to be remembered and how it is used,” OpenAI said. We are taking steps to review and mitigate chatgpt's bias against proactively remembering sensitive information such as your health details unless you explicitly ask for it.
To address the concerns of regulators and privacy advocates, OpenAI has invested heavily in improving ChatGPT's privacy features. In April, OpenAI added the ability to delete chat history and remove user requests from the company's business models after several countries banned the tool.
Despite privacy concerns and claims of racism, discrimination and copyright infringement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to raise new funding in which the company is seeking a historic $7 trillion valuation.
