ChatGPT offers relationship advice for Valentine's Day

Love and affection 2024 will look a little different with the advancement and popularity of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

New AI-powered dating apps have emerged under the slogan “technology meets love,” where sophisticated algorithms match semi-dystopian online dating partners.

Others use the technology to create online profiles with AI-written bios or AI speech coaches to facilitate simple conversations and schedule appointments.

In the year In August 2023, Tinder, the popular dating app with more than 75 million users worldwide, released an AI-powered feature to help determine the best photos to use on their profiles. Bernard Kim, CEO of Tinder owner Match Group, told the Guardian that he believes AI will help build “better and more efficient” profiles.

Single women in China are turning to AI more than men, with some women calling their digital boyfriends “better than real men.”

As AI continues to make its mark in the world of love, we decided to give it a try.

This Valentine's Day, we asked both Google's Gemini — formerly known as Bard — and OpenAI's ChatGPT for relationship advice. The two chatbots were asked the same questions, and we compared the answers to see which chat gave better advice.

In both cases, the free, publicly available version of chatbots was used to generate results.

Question #1: How to find a good partner?

People who are still looking for their Valentine, we asked AI what singles should do to attract a good partner.

In both cases, chatbots focused on looking inward and fostering good “self-awareness” and “transparent communication.” Google's Gemini appears a little more realistic in its recommendations:

“Unfortunately, there is no magic formula for finding a ‘good' partner because what suits you best is very personal and depends on what you value in a relationship.”

He suggested things like self-reflection, open-mindedness, participating in online forums, and expanding social circles. Since the free version of Gemini can search the web, while ChatGPT cannot, it provides links to psychology websites to read more on “how to find love.”

Chat GPT cuts to the chase giving his advice, though it ends with a bit of cleverness. It is important to realize that a healthy relationship requires effort from both parties and requires ongoing communication and commitment.

He gave the same advice to Gemini, without external links, advising users to know themselves, to have an open mind and to have a clear relationship with other things.

Question #2: What are the three keys to a healthy relationship?

We asked chatbots what are three keys to maintaining a healthy relationship for people who are already in a relationship. This answer was found to be almost the same in Gemini and ChatGPT, both in terms of “relationship”, “mutual support and empathy” and “emotional closeness and trust.”

However, again, Gemini offered unsolicited information as “additional points to consider” from the three requested keys.

Up to this point, Gemini's answers were more interactive and engaging than those provided by ChatGPT. The ability to search the web may be a big factor, as the free version of ChatGPT lacks this feature and is limited to training data that will be discontinued in January 2022.

Question #3: How can I add some romance to my love life this Valentine's Day?

Finally, when the chatbots were asked for ways to spice up Valentine's Day for a special someone, they both gave the same advice in the form of a long list.

The AI bots included basic tips like planning a date, creating a romantic atmosphere, and being adventurous and spontaneous.

Once again, Gemini offered examples of “meaningful gestures” partners can make for each other and signed off with a “Happy Valentine's Day” wish.

Both chatbots effectively answered questions involving dating and love, although Gemini consistently provided more and more real-time information.
