Cloudborne, the latest release from Antler Interactive, was successfully demonstrated at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week. Featured at both the Inworld and BGA booths, the first-of-its-kind Web3, RPG, MMO, AI, PC-based game proved to be more than just a long-standing combination of acronyms.
Constantin Berthelier, interactive narrative designer at Antler, led the demonstrations and playtests for attendees at this year's show. “We had all kinds of testers, big names from big studios and publishers. Others were curious about our topic,” he explained.
Audiences have been enthusiastic about Cloudborn's use of AI-powered non-player characters (NPCs), something rival titles are scrambling to implement. With first mover advantage, the team from Antler Interactive managed to generate a lot of interest in their AI-NPC feature Zero.
Constantin said, “I assumed that most of the GDC audience would be aware of the latest updates on the AI scene, and would be somewhat upbeat when we interacted with our characters. But no, wow it delivered the results! Most users are concerned about having the freedom to tell Zero whatever they want.
Cloudborne is a Web3 game title, which means that various game components use blockchain technology to give players more control and ownership. This is expected to open the doors to many opportunities in the fast-growing and competitive technology space. “Executives at major publishers like NetEase, Square, Enix, and Amazon all thought this,” Konstantin said. [the web3 aspect] It will be more interesting when I explain what it allows.
Cloudborne incorporates unique AI and web3 technologies aimed at improving the gaming experience. Using advanced, gameplay-focused AI – developed by its partners, Inworld – Cloudborne introduces a world where players make their moves, changing environments and characters in real-time, leading to immersive and personalized gameplay. Oliver Svensson from Antler Interactive notes, “This is more than simple data; It's about the unexpected ways AI shapes your behavior.” The use of blockchain means players truly own their own characters, items and achievements.
Those who tested the new title at the Game Developers Conference described it as “beautiful”, “unique” and “fresh”, and commented on the “well-designed UI”. Cloudborne is said to have designed “the best possible UI for capturing AI questions and comments,” as one audience member said.
Attending the conference proved to be a catalyst for Antler Interactive's developmental charge as they sought to make Cloudboard a market leader. During the event, they opened pre-partnership discussions with many game developers, developers, artists, narrative designers, technologists, web3 experts and others, and took many contacts to support their development.
Interestingly for the Cloudborn team, while there was a large Web3 presence at GDC, they weren't directly competing for their title at the event. “It was another Web3 game, but it offered a very different concept. AI companies were also present, but they weren't looking for narratives the way we were to create dynamic NPC personalities. One game project was looking at narrative development and AI, but in a non-live model. Cloudborne was satisfied with the idea. He left the event feeling overwhelmed and knowing they had a unique idea for a Web3 game that pushed ownership, experience, AI NPCs, and advanced marketing.
