Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao tried to pledge his multibillion-dollar stake in Binance.US to temporarily return to the United Arab Emirates, according to a newly unsealed court filing.

A letter from Zhao's lawyers to Judge Richard Jones, which was previously unsealed on December 22, shows that Zhao offered his equity in Binance.US, which, according to the letter, was based on $4.5 billion in funding over two years. in the past.

Court records show Judge Jones denied the request in a closed hearing on Dec. 29.

Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering on November 21 and is currently free in the United States on a $175 million bond. He faces up to 18 months in prison and has agreed not to appeal any sentence until then.

Judge Jones had previously barred Zhao from traveling to the United Arab Emirates, citing flight risks and his “substantial wealth and assets abroad”.

The former Binance boss was ordered to stay in the United States until his sentencing on February 23.

Zhao stepped down as Binance's CEO in November 2022 as part of a $4.3 billion settlement with U.S. regulators, alleging he operated an unlicensed money transmitter business and violated bank secrecy laws.
