DeepMind co-founder says AI will be able to invent, market and run businesses by 2029.

The next five years will be revolutionary for the business world, at least according to Mustafa Suleiman, co-founder of DeepMind and CEO of Inflection AI.

An artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer recently spoke at the World Economic Forum, during a panel discussion, telling audience members that he believes AI systems can invent, manufacture, market and sell a product. Business – before 2030.

By Suleiman:

I'm sure that within the next five years, certainly before the end of the decade, not only those capabilities, but those capabilities will be widely available, even in very cheap open source.

While many have described a machine capable of such feats as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Suleiman refuses to get involved. He called the term AGI a nebulous concept and said it was “very vague.”

Instead, according to Business Insider, he said he believes researchers should focus on practical applications for AI technology.

In an earlier critique, Suleiman described it as the “Turing Test,” an analog of whether an AI system can independently (and legitimately) earn $1 million.

He also spoke extensively about the need to limit artificial intelligence systems before it's too late. In his book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-First Century's Greatest Dilemma, published in 2023, Suleiman writes that the next “five years or so are critical.”

Suleiman advocated for the US government to intervene in the AI sector. Last year, he joined OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and executives from Google, Amazon and other tech companies in a meeting with the US Senate to discuss possible regulatory efforts about AI.

Although no enforceable action came from the committee's meetings, Sulaiman and other tech leaders signed a voluntary agreement not to knowingly create harmful AI systems.
