‘Digital Slop:’ Solana CEO’s Brutal Take on NFTs and Memcoins Sparks Outrage

Jesse Polk and Anatoly Yakovenko on X debate whether meme coins and NFTs have intrinsic value or are speculative “digital slop.”

Solana Labs CEO Anatoly Yakovenko is once again at the center of a heated debate. This time around, meme coins and NFTs are referred to as “digital slop” in a public back-and-forth with Base creator Jesse Pollack.

The discussion that unfolded on X over the weekend revolved around the speculation of meme coins and NFTs.

Collision on NFT, price of meme coins

Yakovenko maintains that these assets have no intrinsic value and compares them to loot boxes found in free-to-play mobile games. He said on his Twitter page.

“I've said this for years. Memecoins and NFTs are digital slop.”

Pollak, however, disagrees and says that the cultural and artistic substance behind NFTs is inherently valuable. He argued that monetization equates to good art, which is valued regardless.

“The content itself is important.”

“No one would bother using Solana if it wasn't for meme coins,” one X user shot back. Others accused Solana of undermining the sectors that had buoyed her after the FTX collapse. Flaunch contributor “Caps” also criticized Yakovenko for dismissing creators and marketers.

Still a few came to his defense. The co-founder of NFT stock Space Raiders acknowledged the criticism but saw loyalty in Yakovenko's vision. “I don't think it's completely wrong. If people enjoy digital slop, they'll keep buying. That's the point.”

It is important to note that meme coins and NFTs remain deeply embedded in Solana's success story.
