Dogecoin flaw exploited by hackers, 69% of nodes crashes

A hacker exploited a critical vulnerability in the Dogecoin network, causing 69% of its nodes to crash.

On December 12, the co-founder of the Bitcoin sidechain Sequentia, Andreas Kohl, said that 69% of the Dogecoin network crashed. Cole said an old laptop in El Salvador was used to carry him out.

According to data from Blockchain, Dogecoin had 647 active nodes before the vulnerability was exploited. At the time of writing, Dogecoin had 315 active nodes.

Cole said he used a vulnerability discovered by researcher Tobias Rook to break the node.

DogeReaper vulnerability similar to “Death Note”.

On December 4th, an X account called “DOGE Competence Department” publicly disclosed a vulnerability in the Dogecoin network that could have completely crashed the chain. According to the account, the “DogeReaper” vulnerability allows anyone to remotely hack any Dogecoin node.

The label says the vulnerability acts as a “Death Note” from the Japanese manga and anime of that name. In that fantasy world, writing someone's name in a notebook would cause them to die of a heart attack.

The account said the vulnerability does something similar to Dogecoin nodes. With DogeReaper's social media account, anyone can post a node's address and cause a node to die with a partition error.

In computing, a segmentation fault occurs when a program tries to access a section of memory that it is not allowed to use. When this happens, the operating system stops the program for safety reasons, resulting in a crash.

The account said that since Dogecoin nodes are publicly known, exploiting the vulnerability “anyone could crash the entire Dogecoin network in an instant.” “Had a malicious actor discovered this error on our behalf, it could have stopped the Dogecoin network for at least a few days, with no transactions or blocks,” they wrote.

Despite the potential exposure, the account said Coinbase deemed it underweight and rewarded Ruck with $200.
