An early version of Mickey Mouse will be the top NFT on OpenSea after the copyright expires.

In the year The copyright for the Mickey Mouse image from the 1928 Steamboat Willie short film expired and became available to the public on January 1st. The next day, a number of Steamboat Willie-related Invincible Tokens (NFT) collections appeared at the top of NFT marketplace OpenSea 24. – Hourly viewing list.

A collection titled “Steamboat Willie Public Domain 2024” had a 24-hour turnover of around $1.2 million. This puts the collection on OpenSea's “top” list, joining popular collections such as Bored Up Yacht Club and Pudgy Penguins.

Lawyer on Mickey Mouse NFTs: ‘Suddenly you can't make your own Mickey products'

Steamboat Willie's copyright has expired, with a lawyer reminding the crypto community that there are restrictions on how they can use Mickey Mouse's character. In an interview with Cointelegraph, lawyer Oscar Franklin Tan said that people cannot use the 1928 drawing of Mickey to make people think that their work is associated with Disney.

As Tan explains, “Mickey Mouse, the trademark and the brand, is different from the character, it's still personal. In countries where the legal count is different, the 1928 Mickey image is still private, the lawyer said.
