Downfall for Craig Wright as UK Supreme Court rejects appeal in fraud case
The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has rejected Craig Wright's request to appeal a decision in his legal dispute with popular Bitcoin podcaster Peter McCormack, The Advocate reported on Thursday.
The latest development appears to be another setback for the Australian computer scientist. Despite constantly claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto, he has been unable to provide convincing evidence and has initiated legal action against those who doubted his claims.
Peter McCormack won
Wright filed a defamation suit against McCormack. In the year In 2023, Wright's defamation lawsuit ended in defeat, and this latest ruling could end their protracted five-year legal battle.
Rupert Cooper-Coles, a partner at law firm RPC acting as McCormack's representative;
We only found out about it late last year when[the Supreme Court]rejected Craig Wright's appeal. They were very pleased that the judgment stood – (Award of one pound reputational damage) Craig tried twice to appeal unsuccessfully.
After the Supreme Court rejected Wright's final appeal, McCormack confirmed the development on X (formerly Twitter). He added:
“Leave to appeal was refused by three judges of the Supreme Court, Lord Briggs, Lady Rose and Lord Richards, on the ground that the appeal did not raise a triable question of law. This is the end of the line for Wright's factual claims against me. It's been a hellish 5 years, a bit of a hellish amount to deal with but still we did it.
Wright proposed a COPA settlement
In a related legal battle, Wright reportedly extended an offer of consent to members of the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) and other participating parties. A detailed letter outlining the terms of the proposed settlement was published on Dr. Wright's personal blog.
The letter also stated Wright's willingness to end several legal disputes caused by him. The proposed agreement is particularly noteworthy as it suggests a relinquishment of rights to the Wright Database and copyrights related to the BTC, BCH and ABC databases. Additionally, it grants an “indefinitely irrevocable license” to its counterparties who jointly control, operate and/or own those databases.
Wright's settlement offer adds a new chapter to the ongoing controversy surrounding his claims and legal tangles in the crypto community.
