Elon Musk Launches AI Chatbot ‘Grok’ – Says It Could Be Bigger Than ChatGPT
Elon Musk and his artificial intelligence startup xAI have released “Grok” – an AI chatbot that is thought to outperform OpenAI's first iteration of ChatGipt in several academic tests.
The motivation behind building Grok is to create AI tools equipped to help humanity by enhancing research and innovation, Musk and xAI explained in a November 5 X (formerly Twitter) post.

Musk and the xAI team said that Grok's “unique and fundamental value” is its real-time knowledge of the world through the X platform.
Muska and xAI “also answer the tricky questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” said Muska and xAI. “Grok has a rebellious line designed to answer questions with a bit of wit, so please don't use it if you hate jokes!”
The engine powering Grok – Grok-1 – was evaluated in several academic tests in mathematics and coding, outperforming ChatGPT-3.5 in all tests, according to data shared by xAI.
However, OpenAI's most advanced version, GPT-4, did not outperform in any of the tests.
“It can only be surpassed by models trained on large amounts of training data and trained on computing inputs like GPT-4,” Musk and xAI said.

AI startup Grok says it will be accessible on X Premium Plus for $16 a month. But right now it's only available to select users in the United States.
xAI points out that Grok is still a “very early beta product” that should be developed quickly by the week.

The xAI team also said that they will be implementing additional security measures over time to ensure that Grok is not used maliciously.
“We believe that AI has great potential to contribute significant scientific and economic benefits to society, so we work to develop reliable protections against dangerous types of malicious use.”
“We believe in doing everything we can to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good,” added xAI.
AI startup Grok's launch comes eight months after Musk founded the company in March.
