Elon Musk says first person with Neuralink brain chip 'is recovering well'

The first human patient to be implanted with a Neuralink brain computer device is “doing well,” Neuralink CEO Elon Musk said.

In a January 29 post to X, Musk revealed that the man had successfully received the implant on Sunday, January 28. The initial results also show “promising neural spike detection,” he said.

Neuralink's first product from Neuralink is called Telepathy, a mask that claims to help those with debilitating injuries or paralysis to communicate with a phone or computer through thought alone.

Imagine Stephen Hawking communicating faster than a speed typist or an auctioneer. This is the purpose.

Neuralink first opened applications for human clinical trials in September last year, after the company received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for the PRIME (Precision Robotic Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) study in September 2023. 19 blog post from the firm.

The primary goal of the PRIME study is to create a successful Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) that allows people to “control a computer cursor or keyboard using only their thoughts.”

BCI works by opening a small chamber in the patient's skull and using a surgical robot to implant a Neuralink device — “extremely fine and flexible threads” — in the region of the brain that controls the need for movement.

Once implanted, the device becomes “cosmetic invisible” and acts as a recording and transmission device to transmit data to an app that converts the patient's thoughts into digital motion on a device.

Neuralink safety procedures have come under fire with regulators in recent months, four US lawmakers have asked the SEC to investigate false claims made by Elon Musk regarding the safety of Neuralink implants.

In a now-deleted September 10 X post, Musk said “no monkeys died” as a result of the Neurlink implants. The lawmakers stressed that this was a false statement designed to mislead investors.

In a Sept. 20 letter to the SEC's enforcement division, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine said at least 12 young monkeys have died after suffering debilitating health problems linked to Neuralink implants.

Neuralink did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph's request for comment.
