Ethereum layer 2 zkEVM confirms the launch of the 'scroll' mainnet

Scroll, a new contender in the Zero Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) space, has confirmed the launch of a major network working to scale blockchain.

The team behind Scroll announced the launch in a post on October 17 and added that applications and developer tools on Ethereum can now be migrated to the new scaling solution.

“Everything works out of the box,” said the scrolling team.

A zkEVM solution like Sroll's aims to provide higher transaction costs for decentralized applications running on Ethereum.

It works by combining thousands of transactions off-chain into one, then submitting a proof containing the smallest summary of data to the Ethereum mainnet.

Blockchain data suggests that Scroll has shut down news that its mainnet has been live since Oct. 8 — the date the first smart contract was deployed on theScroll mainnet, according to Etherscan data.

Scroll said the mainnet launch came after 15 months of extensive testing and security audits across three separate tests.

“Our bridge and roll contracts have been audited by Opnzeppelin and Zellik,” Skroll added. His zkEVM circuits have been reviewed by Trail of Bits, Zellic and KALOS.

Over 450,000 smart contracts have been deployed across the three testnets, and over 90 million transactions have been made across 9 million blocks. The organization stated that 280,000 ZK-tokens were also created.

A month ago, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang told Cointelegraph that Scroll will start with centralized features but plans to make it increasingly decentralized.

“We will have a central order and a central approval button,” Zhang said. However, there are plans to remove that button.

“We have a roadmap. […] To address the single point of failure and encourage the community to build better authenticating hardware.

According to Zhang, the scrolling team will come up with several ideas to get the community to discuss what is best for scrolling in the future.

Shiblel was founded with the goal of becoming more community-driven by 2021. Other zkEVM solutions working to scale Ethereum include Polygon, zkSync, StarkWare, and Immutable.

Polygon's Hermes zkEVM technical lead, Jordi Baillina, recently told Cointelegraph that competition in the zkEVM space will make the Ethereum ecosystem stronger.

“Having different projects adds a lot of experience, as well as different approaches, handling things or ways of solving things,” he said.
