It was created to free people.” Buterin explained that efficiency and convenience serve to improve the average issues that centralized platforms handle better.
Instead, Ethereum's purpose is to provide security when surrounding systems fail. That means stable operation even if developers disappear or a hosting service shuts down. They suggest that resilience means reducing the likelihood of failure rather than improving responses.
While centralized finance may chase high-end APIs, Ethereum aims to avoid complete capital loss. The infrastructure must support accessibility even in the event of infrastructure disruption or political interference. This includes ensuring that applications work regardless of carrier issues. Such consistency is important in situations of Internet instability or international conflict.
Resilience enables digital sovereignty and freedom
Ethereum promotes user sovereignty by reducing dependence on external providers or institutions. Buterin compared Ethereum's role to food sovereignty, limiting its exposure to unpredictable external forces. This freedom allows users to control themselves regardless of rules or platform policies. Buterin wrote, “This is the feeling that the world computer can become sovereign.” Such sovereignty, he argued, would in turn make the users sovereign.
He also explained that Ethereum is positioned to support equal access across geographies. Resilient systems allow anyone, anywhere to participate equally without intermediaries. Buterin compared Ethereum to Web2 platforms that support performance but lack freedom.
He pointed out that Web2 companies focus on user growth rather than long-term autonomy. Ethereum should choose a different path based on the main technical values.
