Experts weigh in on the progress of AGI and its impact on Crypto
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance at full speed, some industry experts predict the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) in the next decade. This AI matches and even exceeds human-level intelligence.
In a conversation with SingularityNET CEO Ben Goertzel and Kubik's Scientific Advisor David Vivancos, BeInCrypto explores what needs to happen in order for AGI to emerge and the cryptocurrency market as we know it today. You understand how it hurts.
Transition from AI to AGI
AI typically refers to building computer systems that can perform tasks that require human intelligence.
These include learning, understanding information, solving complex problems, making decisions, exhibiting creative behavior and working autonomously.
The past year has seen breakthroughs specific to generative AI, a technology that can create original context for text, images and video.
“Current AI tech is incredibly broad and in some ways comprehensive. It achieves this generalization by collecting large and comprehensive training data rather than by performing generalizations.
As AI continues to refine itself, researchers, industry experts and the general public wonder when technological superintelligence will arrive.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, the scientific community has increasingly considered the concept of AGI.
In contrast to traditional AI, which guides itself by reading data and interpreting algorithms, AGI emphasizes the integration of logic and logic into its learning processes, which seeks to imitate human cognitive abilities.
To put it precisely, achieving AGI means we build artificial limbs. If we have enough of a super smart person working 24/7 (x) times faster that (x) more computing capabilities than the 8 billion people on the planet Earth, then we have ASI or Artificial Super Intelligence,” said Vivancos.
While AGI does not currently exist and is the subject of ongoing research and experimentation, its development could lead to significant advances. AI enables systems to process and analyze data at a speed and complexity beyond the capabilities of current technologies.
Disputes on the expected arrival of AGI
Despite several breakthroughs in artificial intelligence in the past year, AI researchers and industry experts disagree on how fast AGI can be achieved.
In December, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted that the industry would start seeing the first prototypes of AGI by 2025.
Last April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted that superhuman intelligence would be developed by 2026. Anthropogenic CEO Dario Amodei agreed with Musk's calculation in a separate statement.
Some industry leaders, such as Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, expect AGI-like systems to emerge within the next decade.
Goertzel shared this prediction in an interview with BeInCrypto.
“Only recently have we had the computing power to approach human-level AGI without extremes. A lot of algorithmic manipulation. I think we'll get to human-level AGI within a few years after we do it now,” he said.
Vivancos used a different method in his assessment. It breaks down the progress made in various areas of AGI development.
We averaged 53% completion on our journey to AGI, but it's true. In some areas it is practically already at 100% and in a few others 0%,” he said.
But other experts expressed more angry expectations.
Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist, has repeatedly declared that AGI will not end anywhere.
“All of this is going to take at least a decade and maybe more, because there are a lot of problems that we don't see right now. So we don't know if there's an easy solution in this framework,” LeCun explained in an interview with Lex Friedman.
However, before entertaining the idea of AGI, it is necessary to examine the obstacles associated with its development.
Challenges of AGI development
Most researchers agree that a number of challenges must be overcome to develop true AGI.
“The main challenge is that we don't know how the human brain works. So it's difficult to replicate it,” Vivancos said.
Today's AI systems can identify patterns in complex data and learn through trial and error. However, they struggle with really complex tasks like deep thinking or understanding and using language like a human.
The limitation of computing resources is another issue.
“We're also on top of our current computing capabilities, energy storage and generation capabilities,” Vivancos said.
A computer needs incredibly powerful hardware to mimic the human brain. This functionality includes vast amounts of memory to store brain processes and super-fast processors.
Also, these powerful elements must be seamlessly connected to each other. To reflect the complex neural networks of the human brain, they must allow for fast and efficient information exchange in the system.
Creating a true brain-like computer will require computing power and connectivity beyond the capabilities of current technology.
Difficulties in repeating the behavior of a person
AGI encompasses the ability to perform a variety of goals and tasks in a variety of situations and environments.
But unlike humans, technology does not record its environment.
There are many unsolved research questions that we need to work on to get to human-level AGI. . So far, no one has understood in detail, for example, how abstract conceptual knowledge is related to cognition or specific actions in the human brain, as well as how attention and awareness come from the collective activity of networks of large self-organizing processing elements,” Gorzel said.
Vivancos coined his own term to describe this phenomenon. It refers to the convergence of biological and machine intelligence (Embodied Artificial General Intelligence) or e-AGI.
“For me, the decisive factor is the absence of a “physical” form in which our senses and actuators construct real models of the world, and support the imagined ones that the mind makes,” he said.
This approach emphasizes the importance of the physical body and its relationship to the environment through the development of machine-automated intelligence.
He argues that true intelligence cannot be fully understood by focusing only on abstract thought processes. Rather, it emphasizes the importance of examining how living organisms interact with their physical environment and how they perceive and respond to sensory information.
Nevertheless, despite the lack of embedded intelligence, AGI can greatly affect different segments of society.
The Potential Impact of AGI on Crypto Trading
AGI can completely re-envision the way crypto markets work today.
“Based on current computer development, if AGI arrives in a decade, it will. Working with the best trading bots out there, it can beat the best human crypto trader. Depending on their size, it will disrupt the market,” said Vivancos.
Until then, Goertzel added:
“An AGI with roughly human-level general intelligence could greatly exceed human capabilities in financial matters. Financial markets, including trading, strategic investment and risk management, will be dominated by AGIs and the market economy driven by money is still something that is taken over by AGIs and their owners.
Once AGI is achieved and its capacity is refined over time, its ability to trade cryptocurrencies efficiently will also increase.
“Imagine today's marketing bots on steroids but with the ability to understand that difference. A human expert trader can extract data from the news and all open and close data. Stream every moment and use the macros to track the subtle nano-trends that affect the price, all at the same time,” said Vivancos.
AI meme coins They were one of the main crypto narratives in 2024. These projects use AI to create deeper user interactions through personalized content, reminder campaigns and real-time analytics.
With the rise of AGI, the impact on meme coins promises to be even more impactful.
“One suspects that AGI will be better than humans at predicting which production coins they can do. Go out in a given culture over a period of time, and AGI market makers will be better than human market makers at coordinating mem ecoin. Tokenomics,” Goertzel said.
That said, the market capitalization of AI agent tokens has risen to $13.3 billion.
How blockchain technology can be used to generate AGI.
Currently, the development of AGI is in the hands of a few companies. Major players include Anthroponic, Google DeepMind, IBM, Microsoft and OpenAI.
“There are currently 3 or 4 large closed companies/laboratories at the forefront of AGI development, alongside a few open initiatives, and transparency can only be analyzed because there are no ‘weights' or neural structures being built or the training data used to build them. Also, They stock the best GPUs,” Vivancos told BeenCrypto.
In such cases, the decentralized nature of blockchain technology can be used to increase transparency and democratize access to important information.
“Using blockchain infrastructure, one can create an AGI system that works across a large network. It has no globally distributed machines, small group of owners or controllers.” Goertzel said.
Blockchain technology can help the development of AGI by providing a decentralized and secure data sharing solution. In particular, it allows individuals and organizations to share their data directly with researchers or other authorized parties while maintaining ownership of the information they provide and ensuring privacy.
Blockchain's immutable properties ensure that data cannot be altered or tampered with once recorded. Verification allows you to easily verify the authenticity and origin of the information.
Meanwhile, traceability promotes transparency and accountability by tracking data movement and usage throughout its lifecycle.
“Blockchain seems to be the only technology that has a prayer of allowing AGI to develop for the good of humanity as a whole rather than the narrow ends of certain companies or corporations. “This does not guarantee democratic or ethical AI, but at least it creates a framework within which democratic and ethical AI can be plausibly described. How to use such a framework to work towards compassionate and broadly useful AGI is an important and exciting challenge,” Goertzel added.
Although AGI has the potential to completely solve or ameliorate many of the issues facing humanity today, risks need to be effectively mitigated to avoid negative outcomes. The deployment of this technology will help achieve this goal.
The role of AGI in the future civilization
The impact of AGI on society is huge.
“AGI can solve most of the problems with somewhat superhuman general intelligence. Problems plaguing our society such as aging and death, material scarcity, mental illness, and more. So if we can create a useful human-oriented AGI, we will see a transition to a mode of existence that feels relatively attractive compared to the current situation, Goertzel told BEncrypto.
However, managing the fair and equitable distribution of AGI will be imperative for this to happen.
“AGI can help solve human problems like health, education, environment and all. The others you can imagine, but it can greatly worsen inequality, morality is now a human responsibility,” added Vivancos.
Goertzel highlighted the risks associated with the ownership of AGI technology and the centralization of results.
“Also, the first AGIs were created to love and help, not to harm. Humans, but rather to serve the narrow interests of a particular government or corporation… and then when it ascends to superhuman intelligence, it continues with a narrow minded, not broad-minded and universally empathetic orientation.” He said.
The role of blockchain technology can be particularly useful in distributing AGI equitably.
“The first breakthrough we need is to roll out a human-level AGI system. With meaningful participatory, democratic governance and well-designed, corruption-free decentralized tokenomics on a blockchain-based network, the transition from the pre-AGI to the post-AGI era can be accomplished. A little more efficiently,” Goertzel added.
Human participation will be critical in every AGI development process.
Responsible leadership in the age of AI
Scientists and researchers have a broad consensus that once AGI arrives, civilization will completely change.
“AGI will be what I call the ‘ultimate' human tool, so it's a strategic resource like no other, with the foresight that countries that host it will prosper and survive and compete. So cooperation will be difficult,” Vivancos explained.
Given the potential negative consequences of inappropriate deployment of this technology, it is important to ensure transparency from the outset. Effective human supervision can help make this happen.
“AGI can help us harness this and give all human beings equal opportunity in all of our lives. But AIs are and are as long as we are all part of the process. It will be biased as all humans have, but if we say “let's teach” now AI is with the best human. characteristics, future AGIs may be less distorted and more aligned with agreed human values, reducing the risk of the ultimate technology that will redefine humanity like no other before,” added Vivancos.
Successful AGI development and deployment requires a multifaceted approach. Ethical development, fair distribution, and continued human oversight will contribute to a time when AGI is used as a force for good, benefiting all of humanity.
