Final Fantasy 15 director says AI, VR, Web3 are important to Davis 'like it or not'

According to Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata, developers must embrace future-facing technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Web3 if they want to stay afloat in the ever-changing gaming industry.

Tabata's comments came during a seminar at the Humane Academy where Yoichi Wada, former president of Square Enix and now CEO of JP Games, presented Tabata.

According to a report from Japanese news source 4Gamer, the two gaming industry luminaries discussed the future of gaming with topics ranging from “what is expected of developers now” to “these people are not suitable for developers,” according to Google Translate.

Developers who haven't experimented with generative artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT or aren't trained in Web3 and Metaverse development won't be able to meet the industry's needs going forward, Wada and Tabata say.

Referring to these technologies, Tabata said:

“It's important whether you like it or not, but being a game developer is a service industry, so you only get paid if you make and deliver something that satisfies others.”

The focus of their conversation between the two seemed to touch on the changing landscape and the need for developers to remain curious and agile.

“You need three things to make a game from a management perspective: authorship, art, and teamwork.” He added, “If you don't understand the characteristics of the media and the technologies associated with it, you can't create the right content.”

Under current president Yosuke Matsuda, Square Enix has become one of the biggest proponents of future technologies among AAA game publishers. As Cointelegraph recently reported, the company has pledged to revamp its organizational structure to support blockchain, Web3 and AI technologies across all verticals by 2024.
