Ethereum meme coin FLOKI was one of Friday's biggest winners, riding high on the back of Coinbase announcing that it has added a dog-themed coin to its list of tokens.
The token jumped to a five-month high of more than $0.00027 after the news, up 21% in less than an hour, according to data from CoinGecko. Overall, Floki, named after Elon Musk's real-life dog, is up 16 percent in the past 24 hours. Floki has now nearly doubled in price over the past seven days.
Coinbase's listing roadmap includes crypto tokens that the centralized US exchange is considering listing. While it's not certain whether the token will be added to space trading, we've seen the company make rapid changes on this front in recent days.
On Wednesday, Coinbase put a pair of other popular meme coins—Ethereum's Pepe (PEPE) and Solana's DogwhipHat (WFF)—on its roadmap, and began spot trading for both later that day. Pepe rose to a higher price on the day, although Robinhood added support on the same day, boosting his popularity in the process.
All three meme coins are among the 50 most valuable cryptocurrencies by market value by CoinGecko. Coinbase has historically moved more slowly than some rival exchanges in embracing cryptocurrencies, although it has been moving more following last week's election of Donald Trump, who pledged to ease US crypto regulation.
Major cryptocurrencies have rallied in value over the past week and a half, with Bitcoin jumping to a new all-time high above $93,000. That's $20,000 more than the previous high broken on Election Day.
Dogecoin, the first and most expensive meme coin by market value, was leading the meme charge earlier this week, hitting a three-year high and more than doubling in value in a week. He raised. However, DOGE is down nearly 4% on the day as the market cools—leaving a brighter light for other token coins like Floki.
