Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced today that the electric vehicle maker will end the one-time purchase of full self-driving (monitoring) software and make it available only through monthly subscriptions.

“Tesla will stop selling FSD after February 14,” Musk said through his official X account. “FSD is only available as a monthly subscription.”

Tesla shares were down 3% by midday as investors reacted to the $99-a-month subscription model for its fully self-driving software.

The change comes amid broader challenges to Tesla's demand for autonomy. The company has rolled out limited robotaxi services in Austin and other cities, but still pursues competitors like Alphabet's Waymo for fully driverless operations.

The company reported a 16% year-over-year decline in Q4 shipments and a 5.5% decline in production, marking the second straight annual decline.
