Gemini Is Authorized To Operate In France, Starting In Weeks

Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini has been licensed to operate as a Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) in France. The new registration brings the total number of European territories where Gemini operates to “more than ten,” the company said on January 17, 2005.

Gemini services should be available there in the coming weeks, which will make more than 70 cryptocurrencies accessible to institutions and retailers, he said. Institutional traders can also trade Gemini EOTC over the counter. According to Gillian Lynch, the leader of the European Union and Ireland

“France is a global innovation leader and has a vibrant crypto community, as evidenced by the success of Blockchain Week in Paris. We are excited to soon be able to offer French customers compliant and secure access to the future of financing.”

French media reported in December that financial market regulator Autorité de Marches Financier (AMF) was granting simultaneous registration to Gemini and crypto exchange OKX PSAN (DASP), with Gemini being the 105th registrant.

Licensing from the AMF is a separate, optional step. Forge, a subsidiary of French bank Societe Generale, was the first company to receive a PSAN license in July. At the time of writing, it remains the sole licensee listed on the AMF website. Companies must be “established in France” to obtain a license. US-based Gemini opened its European office in Ireland in May.

Coinbase and Circle AMF received registration in December and Dutch BitVove registered in November.

Gemini is being sued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The New York Attorney General's Office also filed charges against Gemini. Both fits concern Gemini's Meet Us program, which has been working in partnership with Genesis, an affiliate of the Digital Currency Group (DCG). Gemini is embroiled in a legal dispute with Genesis and DCG.
