Google has closed an AI training agreement with Reddit
Google and social media platform Reddit have partnered to provide content to train the search engine's massive artificial intelligence (AI) models. In an announcement, Reddit said it would provide Google with improved methods for training models.
Through the partnership, Google can use Reddit's Data Application Programming Interface (API), which provides real-time content from the Reddit platform, access to Reddit's extensive content, and displays Reddit content on Google products.
Reddit accesses Vertex AI, Google's AI-powered service designed to improve companies' search results. Reddit explains that this update does not affect the terms of the data API, which restricts commercial access without the consent of developers or companies.
This partnership with Google comes after Bloomberg reported that Reddit had secured a $60 million training deal for an unknown AI company. Last year, Reddit announced plans to charge companies for API use. The partnership with Google marks Reddit's first known deal with a major company building AI.
In the year In 2023, Google updated its privacy policy to allow the use of publicly available data for AI training. This update comes shortly after ChatGPT developer OpenAI was sued in a class-action lawsuit in California alleging that it steals personal data from users over the Internet.

However, as of January 2024, generative AI startup Anthropic has pledged not to use customer data for large language modeling (LLM) training, according to amendments to the cloud developer's commercial terms of service.
Despite the deal, Google and Reddit don't always see eye to eye. Reddit has previously threatened to block Google from using visitors to its site over concerns that companies will use the data for free to train AI models.
After years of hiatus, Reddit IPO from Pinterest in 2019.
Creators of AI models have been actively seeking agreements with content owners in recent months to expand their training data beyond scraping the vast web, as many content owners say their content is being used without permission.
