Tech giant Google is ramping up its investment in cloud AI creators Anthroponic. The $2 billion investment, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by an Anthropogenic spokesperson Decrypt, will be split into two for $500 million and another for $1.5 billion.
This $2 billion commitment by Google is a significant increase from the $400 million that the global search giant put into Anthroponic in February. Last month, e-commerce titan Amazon committed to investing $4 billion in Anthropics.
A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on the deal.
Google's massive investment is the latest step in the AI arms race between Google, Microsoft and Amazon. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a $3.2 billion partnership with the Australian government to build data centers and train Australian citizens in artificial intelligence. Like Microsoft, Google has invested $1 billion in the ocean nation.
While Amazon and Google are pouring money into Anthropomorphic, Microsoft appears committed to its long-standing partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Using ChatGPT-4 and the Browse Bing feature, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can search the Internet directly through ChatGPT. Bing browsing was taken offline for several months after it was discovered that users could use it to bypass paywalled content.
For those who don't want to pay $20 a month for the more robust version of ChatGPT, Microsoft includes ChatGPT and OpenAI's Dall-E in the free Edge browser.
Not content with investing in other companies, Google launched its own ChatGPT competitor in February, Google Bard. Like Cloud AI and ChatGPT, Bard is an AI chatbot that uses prompts to generate audio, code, images, and text content.
Adding to its list of AI investments, Google last month launched a $20 million Digital Future project to support the development of “responsible AI,” including combating bias and diversity in AI model training.
“Getting AI right will take a lot from any company,” said Brigitte Goselink, Google's director of product impact. “We hope that the Digital Future project and this fund will support many others in academia and civil society to advance independent research on AI that will benefit everyone.”
