Google has invested 25 million euros to develop AI skills for Europeans

Google has announced plans to launch a 25 million euro ($26.9 million) grant fund to support Europeans in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) skills training.

By helping to provide such training, the AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe says that people can “seize the AI opportunity” at a moment when the continent is ready to “lead the way” in using AI for economic reasons.

We want to do our part by empowering Europe's workforce, supporting people through change, so that everyone benefits.

As part of this initiative, the tech developer said it is working with EU governments, civil society, academics and businesses to provide “advanced” AI training to local startups.

It will target around €10 million to equip its workforce with the skills they need to “not be left behind”. A similar initiative was launched by the Italian government in mid-2023, with which it allocated millions of euros to develop digital skills for workers who are at risk of being cut off due to automation and AI.

According to Google, the AI program follows on from a successful initiative called “Growing Up with Google” in 2015, which offered free training to address the digital skills gap in the European Union. The program has trained more than 12 million people, he said.

This latest initiative includes a partnership with the Center for Public Impact, which seeks applications from EU-based social enterprises and non-profit organizations for AI training to reach more people.

Adrian Brown, executive director of the Center for Public Impact, said AI has great potential to “change the world” but could also widen inequality gaps.

“This new program will help people across Europe develop their knowledge, skills and confidence around AI, ensuring that no one is left behind.”

Google has expanded the languages available for its AI foundation course to 18 and is adding more resources to its Google Professional Certificate program to give professionals hands-on experience applying AI in the workplace.

This comes as local regulators prepare to finalize EU AI legislation aimed at governing the use and development of AI technologies in EU jurisdictions.
