Happy 15th birthday, Bitcoin: Here’s the journey so far
On this day 15 years ago, Satoshi Nakamoto laid the foundation for the cryptocurrency industry with the genesis of the Bitcoin network.
Since 2009, the community has celebrated Bitcoin's birthday every January 3rd, commemorating one of the most significant moments in crypto history.
Bitcoin's 15th Anniversary
The Genesis Block contains the first 50 BTC received as a reward for the transaction, which is released on Sourceforge, a web-based service that is a centralized online space for developers to manage and manage free and open source software projects. Sourceforge was the original repository of Bitcoin's open source code base before it was moved to GitHub.
Due to the lack of a previous block worth mentioning, the first 50 bitcoins are non-extractable and remain in the transaction address.
The ban contained Nakamoto's message, citing the headline “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on bank second bailout” from the UK Times newspaper.
The mysterious Bitcoin creator released the project's white paper the day after the 2008 financial crisis, the worst recession since the Great Depression of 1929. What Nakamoto didn't like were the banks and middlemen.
How far has BTC gone?
In less than fifteen years, BTC has changed the landscape of digital assets and the financial market as a whole. Bitcoin has evolved into a network with a market capitalization of over $888 billion, leading an ecosystem worth $1.8 trillion and maintaining a 52% dominance in the cryptoverse.
Although BTC is currently valued at around $43,000, its price once rose above $68,000. The asset has attracted interest from governments, banks, traditional financial giants, corporations and high-net-worth individuals, leading to the creation of a number of derivatives, including exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The crypto community expects the first place to launch a Bitcoin ETF in the U.S., which more than a dozen asset management companies are vying for. There is also an upcoming Bitcoin halving set to reduce BTC production.
Meanwhile, BTC ended 2023 as the best-performing asset, up 160%, ahead of stock indices, bonds, stocks and gold.
