Here’s every upcoming Star Wars game you shouldn’t miss
8 months ago Benito Santiago
When Lucasfilm Games licensed Star Wars to Electronic Arts in 2013, it seemed like a major coup for the developer. At the time, the publisher was only able to release a handful of Star Wars games, and they weren't Without controversy.
Most recently, Electronic Arts announced the cancellation of the first-person shooter from Respawn – the studio behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, as well as the Titanfall series.
But this is a new era for Star Wars games, and several studios are making their own adventures set in a galaxy far, far away. Here's what to expect.
Star Wars Outlaw
The Star Wars name has a strong history of space wizards named Skywalker or Palpatine – stories about other corners of the Star Wars universe that we didn't get until recently.
Games are no different. In the year We had some great games inspired by Star Wars dogfights in the 1990s and 2000s, but most of them still revolve around Jedi and Sith in Star Wars titles. Star Wars Outlaws is one of the most high-profile releases from this.
Outlaws follows Kay Vess and her trenchcoat-wearing droid friend Nix as they “attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen”. Set between “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” Outlaws is a third-person action title in development from the Ubisoft Massive team behind Tom Clancy's The Division and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Fans of Ubisoft games like the aforementioned The Division and Watch Dogs should keep an eye on this one. Ubisoft has yet to set a release date, but says it will be released this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S.
Star Wars Hunters
Star Wars Predator is a free-to-play, player-versus-player Star Wars title from Zynga. In this game, you'll choose new Star Wars characters that include bounty hunters, stormtroopers, and heroes of the Rebellion for 4v4 arena battles. The game doesn't have an exact release date, but it's currently slated for release this year on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
An untitled Star Wars strategy game
Bit Reactor may not be a household name, but the team has the necessary cred. The studio was started by members of the former Firaxis team – that studio responsible for the Civilization and XCOM games, among others. So these people have a good strategy. And Respawn is working with Bit Reactor to bring the game to life.
According to Beat Reactor, this Star Wars title is mainly inspired by turn-based games like XCOM, so we can expect something along those lines in the future.
One of the most popular Star Wars games is Star Wars: Republic Commando, a first-person strategy game, so there's definitely room to slow things down and get tactical in the Star Wars swashbuckling universe. Bit Reactor has not yet announced a title, platform or release window for this game.
Star Wars Eclipse
Star Wars Eclipse is an upcoming Star Wars game set in the High Republic Star Wars story in development by Quantic Dream. The High Republic era is about 500 to 100 years before the Star Wars era we are most familiar with. Anakin Skywalker wasn't even born yet, and the Sith seemed like a distant memory.
Quantic Dream in Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, both adventure games focused on player decisions and storylines rather than conventional game mechanics such as action and strategy. With those two pieces of information in mind, we can imagine that Star Wars Eclipse will be very different from other Star Wars titles.
That being said, Quantic Dream didn't show much except a vibes-heavy trailer. We don't know what the game will look like, when it will be released, or what platforms it will be released on. Quantic was previously a PlayStation-first developer, but Star Wars games are rarely exclusive to the platform – so we'll see.
Knights of the Old Republic remake
This is mainly because the one on the list has not been officially cancelled. In the year It has been announced that the remake is slated for a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2021, with Aspyr Media working on the remake. Aspire has been hosting and releasing Star Wars games for over 20 years, including the recent Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Battlefront re-releases, so it seems like a shoo-in.
Emberser Group, which owns Aspire Media, transferred the game to another of its studios, Saber Interactive, last year and just recently announced the sale of Saber Interactive. according to Bloomberg Correspondent Jason Schreier, this remake will go on sale with Saber Interactive, but it does not shed any light on when and if this will be released. The game isn't officially canceled as mentioned, but you should consider it on the back burner for now.
Untitled Star Wars Jedi 3
After two highly acclaimed Star Wars Jedi titles, we can safely say that EA and Respawn are working on a third. This has not yet been officially confirmed, however; Actor Cameron Monaghan revealed that the main character, Cal Kestis, is working on the play. It's not enough to call it official yet, but it's worth keeping an eye on.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is released in late 2019, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (shown) is released in early 2023. That's less than 3 years of development for a full-sized and well-received sequel, when games stay in development for five or more years before release. So if we're ever going to hear about a new game in the series, we're guessing it'll be soon.
An untitled Star Wars game
Of all the games on this list, Skydance New Media's untitled Star Wars game is the one we know of. The game is being directed by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves director Amy Hennig, who also helmed the Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra game for the studio.
Hennig previously worked on a canceled Star Wars game for Electronic Arts under the working title Project Ragtag. With Hennig currently helping out with that Marvel game, we expect this one to be way out, and the studio hasn't yet said what kind of game it will be or given any indication of when we can expect it.
