Google has expanded its search engine capabilities to allow users to check cryptocurrency wallet balances through the platform.

This feature supports various blockchain networks including Bitcoin, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon and Fantom, giving users an overview of their holdings.

The new update allows searches for three Bitcoin address formats: P2PKH, P2SH and Bech32. It displays current balances and recent transactions, providing real-time insight into crypto holdings. Moreover, the Ethereum Enumeration Service (ENS) further enhances access to digital asset management by integrating domains.

“Scales only show the native token for each network. The last updated timestamp indicates the balance with the last foreign transaction. Updates are not instantaneous,” Google search results note.

This development is hailed as a step towards mainstream crypto adoption. It leverages Google's massive daily search volume to deliver on-chain activity to a wider audience. However, it has sparked debate among privacy-minded individuals regarding the implications of centralized data collection for user privacy.

“It's like a huge invasion of privacy,” said economist Zac Guignard. Meanwhile, other members of the community believe the feature will make it easier for regulatory agencies to monitor investors' crypto balances.
