How to get rid of phone number threats
Coinbase's product director recently said that people should use accounts protected by hardware security keys, which he described as the best form of security against hackers. Unlike 2FA via text messages or other advanced digital approaches, which are vulnerable to hacking and social engineering, those keys provide an impenetrable level of protection.
Why phone number linked accounts are a security risk.
On-chain sleuth ZachXBT responded with a critical suggestion: Additionally, the phone number's connection to the accounts should be deleted by Coinbase. Eliminating this feature will go a long way in stopping social engineering scams, which are typically launched using phishing calls or messages from fake Coinbase support, he said.
The main type of threat is social engineering, which uses some security features such as SMS 2FA. Fraudsters often succeed in tricking users into providing their account details, resulting in account takeover and loss of funds.
Hardware keys are effective in avoiding such breaches as they require hardware devices or gadgets to access the system and are less likely to be hacked.
For better security, Coinbase has been promoting the use of these keys among its users. This call echoes other attempts to increase security standards as threats to crypto investors rise.
