In the year The number of crypto companies officially registered to operate in Spain by 2023 has grown by approximately 56%. According to the official register published as an Excel document on the website of the Central Bank of Spain, 30 companies will be licensed as virtual asset service providers by 2023.

With less than a week to go before the end of the calendar year, the 53 companies added to the registry in 2022 still beat the 2023 figure. However, this may be due to the fact that the record first opened in 2022.

In 2023, several international platforms such as Revolut, Bitpanda, Crypto.com and Vivid joined the register. Despite the recent news about Coinbase's anti-counterfeiting and Kraken's acquisition of a virtual value service provider registration, some big names are still missing from the record. Domestic companies still dominate the market with 61 out of 85 licenses.

Spanish regulators have recently taken an active stance on the crypto market. In October, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation announced that it will implement the European Union Markets in the Regulation of Crypto-Assets six months before the deadline.

In November, the National Securities Market Commission opened the first case against a technology provider in the country for violating crypto promotion rules. That same month, Spain's tax administration agency introduced Form 721, a tax declaration form for digital assets held abroad.

In addition, the agency sent 328,000 warning notices to individuals who failed to pay their cryptocurrency taxes for the 2022 fiscal year. This represents a 40 percent increase in the number of notifications by 2021.
