Korea University began to diversify with private student access

South Korean telecom provider LG Aplus, a subsidiary of LG, recently launched a Metavas experience at Yonsei University in Seoul.

The Yonsei Metaverse, properly called “Meta Yonsei,” features the full recreation of the university's Sinchon campus, such as the school's auditorium and library, as well as state-of-the-art digital resources and meeting spaces for faculty and students.

Unlike many Metaverse experiences, Meta Yonsei restricts many of its features to confirmed students. While prospective students and other outsiders will be able to walk around the campus to see the features and signage, access to peer-to-peer tools and certain areas is limited to enrolled students.

In a local newspaper called Chosun Biz, Meta Yonsei's experience was well received by campus students.

Typically, exchange experiences targeted at specific communities, such as universities, focus on social aspects. As such, they will be targeted at prospective students or business partners. In practice, these treatments resemble digital museums rather than action spaces.

However, the Meta Yonsei's digital twin seems to have been designed with productivity in mind. Tools like Team Meeting functionality enable virtual workspaces, video and audio conferencing, and automated annotation and captioning in a live experience. This gives students the impetus to engage in Metavas throughout their academic career.

This helps prepare students for the realities of today's global workplace, where productivity tools like Google Meet and Zoom and real-time cross-border collaboration between diverse workforces are commonplace.

Students and teachers can interact with structured check-ins and supervised activities. In the year By 2023, according to the project's announcement report, up to a thousand users will be able to attend virtual events in the Metaverse Hall – the university's real installation digital doppelganger – including the ability to watch guest speakers and experts on a virtual stage.
