Medium jumps into AI video creation

Midjourney, perhaps the best-known visualization tool running in a Discord server, is spreading its AI wings. The creators of Midjourney announced on Tuesday to introduce a “text to video” model in the next few months.

The company will begin training its video models in January, CEO David Holmes said in an “Office Hour” Discord session. This move represents a natural evolution of the platform, which builds on a mature imaging model to drive competitiveness in the generative video industry.

The Discord session notes included planned fixes for V6 Niji—the Midjourney manga/anime generator model—and consistency fixes for the upcoming Midjourney V6 official release. The company wrote that the job listing requires “training for new video models,” which could be ready “within a few months.”

No further information about the model has been shared by Holmes or the Midjourney team.

Midjourney is known for emphasizing quality and user experience at raw speed—even if it takes a drag from competitors. Months after features on other platforms such as Stable Diffusion became tangible, the company introduced enhancements such as tinting and tinting, and recently started with simple text generation after it became a common capability in models such as the Dall-E 3, SDXL or others. Even a few popular generators like Ideogram or IF.

Entering a crowded field

This move on video comes after they are eliminated from the tournament. Stability AI recently announced stable video streaming; Meta showed off the EMU video generator, and models like Pika and Runway ML are marking their territory, leaving Midjourney's entry to emerge as a strong contender. Additionally, other image generators such as Leonardo AI have stepped up the competition by implementing video generation capabilities.

The latest v6 update is the company's latest effort to stay relevant and competitive, boasting improved acceleration and more realistic visuals from the Mid-Journey. If the models show some consistency, they can get a strong foothold in this field—even with imperfect models.

The implications of these developments go far beyond the competition for corporate dominance. As Midjourney and others refine and refine their offerings, the creative and media industries stand on the brink of an era of change. The ability to generate, control, and interact with video content through AI opens up many possibilities—from simplifying things for entertainers and advertisers to reshaping how we perceive reality.
