Social media giant Meta has added its new AI assistant to nearly all of its apps, co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday.

In a video posted on Instagram, Zuckerberg said: “We are releasing the new version of Meta AI, our assistant, you can ask any question on our apps and glasses. Our goal is to build world-leading AI and make it accessible to everyone.

The news comes as Meta released the core components of Lama 3 under an open source license, allowing public use and evaluation.

After the Metaverse ambitions were crushed in late 2022, Meta shifted focus to generative AI. Rumors started swirling that Meta would be releasing a Llama 3 generator AI model in May. The company started publishing on Thursday morning.

“The bottom line is that we believe Meta AI is the smartest AI assistant you can freely use right now,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta AI uses real-time data from Google and Bing in its responses, Zuckerberg said.

Starting today, a new, free-to-use Meta AI search bar has been added to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger that users can log into their Meta app. Meta's Twitter competitor, Threads, was not featured in the announcement. In addition to its social media applications, Meta AI is also accessible to Facebook users through the Meta AI website.

Zuckerberg said that both desktop and mobile versions can create high-quality images. Once created, images can also be animated into short three-second clips.

The desktop version of Llama 3 Image Generator starts generating images while the user is entering a prompt, giving them a snapshot of what the final image will look like.

Although the video ad is aimed at the core app user, Zuckerberg says his decision to open the Llama 3 AI model is the best way to create better and safer products.

“We're investing heavily in building leading AI, and responsibly opening up our models is an important part of our approach,” Zuckerberg said. “The technology industry has shown time and time again that open source leads to better and more secure products, faster innovation and a healthier market.”

Artificial intelligence generated by AI is an ongoing and growing problem that is only exacerbated by the constant cycle of new and updated generative AI models hitting the market.

In February, the Biden administration said it would use watermarking and encryption to label authentic content and fight political disinformation.

Aiming to get in front of the Lama 3, it's being used to create deep illusions, and images created using the tool include the disclaimer “Imagined with AI” at the bottom of the image. Meta, for its part, pointed out that the AI development team has included safeguards to detect requests that go against company policies, such as asking how to commit crimes.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Decrypt.
