Meta banned the use of AI ad creation tools for political advertisers.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, does not allow political campaigns and advertisers to use artificial intelligence (AI) in its advertising tools, a company spokesperson told Reuters in an exclusive report.
On November 6th, Meta updated its help center to reflect the decision. In a note explaining how the tools work, the company says it's testing new creative AI ad creation tools in Ad Manager: “Whether advertisers are running campaigns for housing, employment or credit or social issues, elections or politics or advertising. Businesses related to health, pharmaceuticals or financial services are not currently permitted to use these generative AI features.
“We believe this approach will allow us to better understand the potential risks and build the right safeguards for using Generative AI in advertising related to sensitive topics in regulated industries.”
Meta's general advertising standards, however, do not have any rules on AI, although it does fact-check ads on the platform and prohibit its partners from running deleted content.

In September, Google updated its political content policy, which mandates that all verified election advertisers disclose the use of AI in their campaign content.
Google's standards say “manifested content featuring real or realistic-looking people or events” and that the ads must be “clear and prominent” where users see them.
However, on Google's platforms, “ads that contain artificial content that is altered or created in a way that is not relevant to the claims made in the ad are exempt from these disclosure requirements.”
Regulators in the United States are considering creating regulations around political AI deep fakers ahead of the upcoming 2024 election cycle.
Already, there are concerns about the use of AI in social media as it could influence voter sentiment by creating fake news. What's more, AI's reach allows for the production of fake news, deep fakes, and more.
Additionally, one of the most popular AI chatbots, ChatGPT, has raised questions about its left-leaning political bias. However, these claims are widely debated in the AI community and academia.
