Metallica X’s account appears to have been hacked to promote a crypto token
Heavy metal band Metallica's official X account appears to have been hacked, with exploits using the breach to promote the Solana token to Symbol Metal.
The token was first announced in a June 26 post on the official Metallica X account, which claimed that the token was created by Solana-based token distribution pump.fun – in partnership with Ticketmaster.
Ticketmaster has not made any public announcements about the partnership and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Posts from Metallica's account claim that fintech company MoonPay is involved with the token, which MoonPay president Keith Grossman denied in an X-Post saying, “MoonPay does not support METAL.”
A post on Metallica's account promoting the token points to the band's official website, which has no information about the token.
A subsequent series of posts claims that users can cash in their METAL tokens to redeem exclusive items, including “free concert tickets,” custom game consoles, and merchandise, in an attempt to disguise buyers. One post even said the token would hold prizes.
The total value of the METAL token reached a short peak of more than $3 million 20 minutes after launch, according to Dexscreener data.
