MetaMask users get 2FA security with MultiversX Snap integration

MultiversX, a non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchain, has introduced MultiversX Snap for MetaMask, featuring the onchain two-factor authentication (2FA) protection feature.

According to a press release shared with Cointelegraph, MultiversX Snap allows MetaMask users to connect to the MultiversX ecosystem while enhancing security measures via 2FA.

MetaMask Snaps are third-party audited add-ons that provide users with extended functionality beyond the standard MetaMask wallet features.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, MultiversX co-founder and CEO Benjamin Minku explained that the company “views efforts like the MetaMask Snap as a major win for the industry.”

“By removing the bottlenecks of multi-chain navigation, we will demonstrate the performance, cost-effectiveness and scalability of MultiversX like never before.”

2FA security implications

The integration of MultiversX's 2FA feature into MetaMask aims to provide a significant security feature upgrade for MetaMask users.

According to the press release, the 2FA feature “is embedded in its own proprietary protocol, ensuring compatibility across applications and wallets in the ecosystem.

Lucian Mincu, chief information officer at MultiversX Labs, explained that the new integration “provides a useful preview” of what the “Sovereign Chains SDK for next-gen” layer 2s Web3 can offer.

“It facilitates access to the MultiversX ecosystem, its opportunities and innovations, providing MetaMask users with a unified experience for many of our latest developments.”

The reason behind the new merger

According to the press release, by 2023 “324,000 users fell victim to crypto phishing scams,” resulting in the loss of more than $300 million in digital assets.

In this regard, MultiversX has developed its own onchain 2FA solution to prevent fund theft, even when the user's passphrase is compromised.

The press release says the guardians were “publicly challenged” by the community initiative. One example of a wallet lineage being publicly shared is the codenamed EGLDHeist.

Although the hacked lineage is publicly accessible, the funds remain secure due to the onchain 2FA feature.

MultiversX and Cornell blockchain education program

On June 12, MultiversX partnered with Cornell University's eCornell to launch a sponsored blockchain education program for underserved college students.

The program aims to give 100 students the opportunity to participate in a two-month educational experience, which will be awarded a certificate upon completion.

The online program is conducted in private clusters that include small, instructor-led groups to ensure students receive “personalized attention and a supportive environment.”
