To enhance Nigeria's digital initiatives and global presence, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has urged the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria's security framework to improve outcomes.

The Director-General of the agency, Kashifu Inua, discussed this matter with the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Commander, Alhaji As Adeleke, represented by the Deputy Commander, D. Igbeji, in a closed meeting with Cointelegraph.

Inua emphasized the unique methods used by the security and information technology (IT) sectors in their operations. He stressed that the security and IT sectors can work together for the betterment of the security sector by using technologies such as artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT).

Inua expressed NITDA's desire to form meaningful partnerships, noting that joint work in the IT and security sectors is in line with NITDA's Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0). This is especially related to the pillar that emphasizes building strategic partnerships and collaborations.

In the year By November 2023, NITDA advocated for collaboration between NITDA, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and financial institutions. The agency has focused on furthering digital payments using new technologies like AI and data analytics.

Exploring AI further, Inoue pointed out that AI is a global driving force. They emphasized their role in clarifying disputes, making tasks more manageable, responding quickly, and providing solutions.

In his remarks, NISS Commander Adeleke expressed the desire of the institute to learn from the experience of NITDA. Adeleke said the purpose of NISS is to obtain valuable insights for the Executive Briefing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to assist in policy development and implementation. he said:

“We are here to benefit from your experience and gather everything we can from the beginning of the course. Ultimately, we aim to present an executive brief to President Bola Ahmed Tinu, GCFR that will facilitate policy formulation and implementation.”

NITDA is promoting the development of AI in Nigeria through initiatives such as the National Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.

In October, the Nigerian government announced a grant of 5 million naira ($6,444) to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers. The initiative is part of Nigeria's Artificial Intelligence Research Plan, which is designed to facilitate economic growth through the widespread use of AI.
