Open source Bitcoin education aims to expand global financial literacy.

El Salvador-based Bitcoin education initiative Mi Primer Bitcoin recently announced the launch of a revamped Bitcoin Diploma program with a new open source approach.

Mi Primer Bitcoin was launched in 2021 as a local education initiative and coincided with El Salvador becoming the first country to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender.

This new update of the program has been developed in collaboration with Bitcoin educators and enthusiasts to provide a comprehensive curriculum covering various aspects of Bitcoin, from its history to its technical workings and everyday applications.

Best of all, the update made the program open in nature, meaning all materials, including the student workbook, are freely available on GitHub. According to the announcement, this is the hope to encourage collaboration and translation around the world.

John Dennehy, founder and CEO of Mi Primer Bitcoin, emphasized the transformative potential of Bitcoin education. He describes how financial literacy in the age of Bitcoin can foster innovation, creativity and long-term planning.

Dennehy told Cointelegraph that this curriculum update marks a big step in the project's mission to “power the world with Bitcoin education.”

“We're always trying to improve the content with each new release, but at the same time we've built a much better infrastructure to allow people to use it better in their local context – for example, translations used to be ad hoc, but now there's an organized infrastructure for communication and best practice guidelines.”

The previous diploma was translated into nine languages within a year, for which 26 translations are already underway.

The former diploma in El Salvador has taught more than 25,000 students since the project's inception and has held several graduation ceremonies.

In September 2023, Mi Primer partnered with El Salvador's Ministry of Education to include Bitcoin in the public school curriculum by 2024.

Since its inception, Mi Primer Bitcoin has expanded its reach beyond El Salvador by partnering with educational institutions and governments worldwide.

Last fall, Bitcoin Cuba announced its partnership with the program to bring Bitcoin education to local communities.
