According to Axel Springer CEO Matthias Döpfner, it is a “first-of-its-kind” collaboration where ChatGPT users can access curated summaries of news content from Axel Springer's diverse media portfolio – including otherwise paid content. The publisher uses GPT-4 to recommend content and answer user queries.
In turn, OpenAI uses Axel Springer's content to train new AI models.
The ad claims the integration provides transparency and deep engagement by providing tags and links to full articles.
“We are deeply committed to working with publishers and creators around the world and ensuring they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models,” said OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap, who said the setup will benefit both companies and the public. It finds “new ways to access quality real-time news content with our AI tools.”
The intersection of AI and journalism has its challenges, including lack of transparency and the risk of misinformation. These issues are reflected in a survey from Ipsos Global, where 56% of Americans and 64% of Canadians believe AI will exacerbate misinformation.
AI's ability to combat disinformation is also being explored, as seen in AI Fact Checker and Microsoft's integration of GPT-4 with the Edge browser. Some of these tools have proven effective in eliminating false information.
The Associated Press responded to these concerns by issuing guidelines limiting the use of generative AI, emphasizing the importance of human control.
With increasingly automated future predictions, entrusting the heavy lifting of news gathering and distribution to algorithms may be inevitable—but it warrants careful rethinking and human oversight.
