Polkadot's new proposal to reduce unpaid time to 2 days

The Web3 Foundation (W3F) researchers have introduced a new Request for Comments (RFC-0092) proposal to reduce unbinding time for tokens held on Polkadot.

The new method proposes to reduce the non-stop process from 28 days to two days – aimed at improving user comfort and competitiveness without compromising security.

“The new method leads to a significant situation [sic] It reduced the average connection time by queuing new unpaired requests and comparing their duration to the size of the queue.

An unfiltered renovation is offered

The mechanism proposed by W3F consists of a binding system that queues unpaired requests and measures the time taken by the size of the queue.

If the proposal goes to the voting stage and is approved, the new system would allow the minimum waiting time to be reduced to just two days when the queue is empty.

The system will prevent the connection period from exceeding the current fixed period of 28 days and provide users with a faster and more efficient workflow.

Reasons for driving

The driving factor behind the introduction of RFC-0092 is that Polkadot has one of the longest non-associative periods among the proof-of-stake protocols.

Despite the high annual percentage yield of depositing on Polkadot, the long downtime may deter participation from users who prefer faster options.

“The current length of transfer time imposes significant costs on any entity seeking to perform basic operations such as reorganizing/consolidating assets or updating private key infrastructure. It also limits the participation of users with a large preference for liquidity.”

Simulation analysis

The proposed uncoupled queuing method was accompanied by empirical analysis to simulate the potential of the new system.

The simulation indicates that the average bond time decreases to 2.67 days, while the system remains sensitive to large uncoupled events without exceeding the 28-day upper limit.
