Prediction Markets With Meme Coins: Crypto’s Next Alpha?

Prediction markets have emerged as one of the fastest-growing corners of crypto just as memes retreated from their recent highs, setting off a wider debate in the industry about where speculative capital is headed in 2026.
The comparison was highlighted after Calci's head of crypto, John Wang, described the prediction markets as the “meme coins of 2023” and argued that both traders are attracting attention as they look for asymmetric opportunities.
The sentiment rested following a volatile run that has characterized the past two years as the meme coin's activity has slowed considerably.
Meme coins had their moment – is this the phase of collecting?
In 2023, Meme Coins moved with the launch of a new token and social media exposure.
The sector's total market capitalization was close to $22 billion at the end of the year, and trading activity has increased significantly.

Data from the period showed that the average trading volume rose more than ninefold in the first eleven months.
Two strong rallies characterized the year, notably the April-May burst triggered by a highly speculative start.
That estimated power in 2010 By 2024, meme coins will hit a peak market cap of around $150 billion in December, aided by Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Pepe, and political-oriented tokens.
The reverse was equally sharp. In the year By the end of 2025, the total value of the sector had fallen below $42 billion, daily volumes were declining and individual tokens had lost most of their previous gains.

Market data now shows that memecoin trading volume is down about 85% from its peak, indicating a broad pullback in risk appetite.
Are Traders Done With Meme Coins? Prediction markets are quietly taking over.
As the meme coins faded, the prediction markets moved in the opposite direction.
Platforms such as Kalshi, Polymarket and Limitless recorded a total transaction volume of $44 billion this year, with Kalshi alone reaching $1 billion in weekly volume, mostly from sports and political contracts.

On-chain prediction markets have expanded rapidly. Monthly volume from less than $100 million in early 2024 has risen to more than $13 billion today, a 130-fold increase, according to joint research by Kieroc and Dunn Analytics.
In the year Non-sports markets, including economics, politics and technology-related events, account for most of the growth in 2025.
The structure of prediction markets differs significantly from memecoins, a point frequently raised by industry participants.
Prediction contracts allow traders to buy “yes” or “no” stocks that are tied to a specific outcome.
Proponents argue that this creates more transparent pricing and limits some of the manipulation risks that have plagued low-liquidity token markets.
Returning critics counters are limited by design, making it difficult for small traders to earn high profits compared to early stage memecoin trading.
Can Prediction Markets Kill Meme Coins?
Calling the trend “prediction markets will kill memecoins” misses the point.
Memecoins are not dead. Liquidity has simply fallen, and that crunch is affecting many other crypto sectors as well.
History shows that meme-driven markets are dormant, not extinct. As volatility returns and risk appetite expands, memecoins can grow rapidly.
At the same time, prediction markets are gaining a sustainable user base. Their development is not just cyclical talk. It is driven by real-world events, regulatory transparency in some jurisdictions, and the need for structured assessment. This gives them a resilience that memecoins often lack during a downturn.
A more likely outcome is coexistence, not replacement.
Memecoins will continue to dominate during speculative booms and focus-driven cycles. Prediction markets appeal to traders looking for transparency, capacity-based pricing and event-based exposure. They serve different psychological and financial needs.
If anything, the current shift reflects a maturing crypto market, one where capital circulates rather than evaporates and speculation takes many forms rather than converging around a single narrative.
