Pro-Crypto Lawmaker Tom Emer Wins Republican Nomination for House Speaker

Republican members of the United States House of Representatives have nominated current Majority Whip and crypto supporter Tom Emmer as their nominee to be the next speaker.

According to many reports from October 24, Representative Emmer will be the Republican candidate in the next vote to determine the Speaker of the House after the closed door. The congressman was one of several candidates considered by Republicans after Republican Rep. Jim Jordan failed to win enough votes to win the speakership and Rep. Steve Scalise dropped out of the race.

On October 3, US lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to vacate the Speaker's seat, effectively removing Representative Kevin McCarthy from the position. Rep. Patrick McHenry, a pro-Creto lawmaker who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, has been serving as interim speaker after Republicans failed to rally behind a single candidate — Rep. Jordan, who failed to win a majority in the House after three rounds. of voices.

Representative Emmer announced his intention to seek the Speaker's seat on October 20. Speaking to Cointelegraph at the II Conference in September, he considered himself a tech-savvy legislator who is a non-partisan issue in Congress. Cointelegraph reached out to Rep. Emmer's office, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

“Emer brings a fresh perspective, a lot of energy with personality,” said Ron Hammond, director of government relations for the Blockchain Association. “For the industry, it's great to have someone who understands these technologies.”

Without a Speaker, the House of Representatives has effectively stopped leading crypto bills passed by the Financial Services Committee to a full vote. Until Republicans get 217 votes — based on the number of lawmakers present — for a candidate, the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act, the Blockchain Regulatory Verification Act, the Payment Transparency Stablecoins Act, and the Keep Your Coins Act. All are bound by law.

It's unclear whether the House will have enough support to win the Speakership, with a vote expected in the next day or two, without clear leadership. All Democrats between 212 and 210 – the last three rounds of voting – unanimously supported Representative Hakeem Jeffries, while approximately 20 Republicans voted for individuals outside of the Republic of Jordan. Representative Emmer received only one vote on each of the three ballots.
