Research shows effective Decentralized Infrastructure Networks (DePINs) as an enabler for mobile devices.

Zug, Switzerland, April 24, 2024, Chainwire

Researchers from the Communication Systems Group of the University of Zurich, in collaboration with the Acurast Association Building on Polkadot and other ecosystems, have announced important results in their latest study, “Performance Analysis of Decentralized Physical Infrastructures and Centralized Clouds.” This work demonstrates the feasibility of decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) as robust traditional centralized cloud computing platforms.

DP's use of blockchain technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) aims to increase data sovereignty, reduce dependence on centralized models, and improve system resilience against potential failures. The study specifically highlights Accurust, a new decentralized serverless cloud network that capitalizes on the resources of underutilized smartphones to handle complex computing tasks with security and efficiency.

Key findings

Improved efficiency: Acurist has demonstrated the ability to perform more computationally intensive tasks than traditional cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform and Amazon AWS. Energy Efficiency: Acurast significantly reduces energy consumption, compared to existing centralized server infrastructure, making it an environmentally friendly option. Empirical Evidence: The study provides empirical evidence to support the theoretical benefits of DEP, demonstrating Accurust's ability to reliably and cost-effectively handle compute-intensive applications.

“The advent of decentralized technologies offers a unique opportunity to rethink how we manage and manage digital infrastructure,” says the PhD student and junior researcher at the Communication Systems Group (CSG) at the University of Zurich (UZH). Project. “Acurast not only challenges the status quo, but can provide a scalable, reliable and sustainable model for future computing needs.”

This study represents a significant step toward understanding and harnessing the power of DePINs to calculate. It opens up a real alternative to existing cloud providers for applications in all industries, where privacy is especially important.

The full research paper is publicly available and has been accepted at the upcoming DPin Workshop at the International Conference on Blockchain Technology (ICBC) 2024.
