Samsung Is Looking For New Phone Forms With AI In Mind: Report

Tech giant Samsung is reportedly looking at ways to change the form factor of its smartphones to better suit AI applications and functions.

In a recent interview, Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung's mobile experience division, told The Australian Financial Review that the new generation of “AI phones” will look “dramatically different” from regular phones.

A successful implementation will make “AI phones” more “mobile” and may have more sensors and larger screens than today's phones.

Roh told AFR that the “lion's share” of Samsung's mobile phone research and development is currently directed at these phones, but he did not share what conditions the company is looking at.

The form factor is an aspect of hardware design that defines and defines size, shape, and other physical components.

Since the invention of the Apple iPhone, most smartphones have adopted a slim rectangular form factor of varying sizes.

Roh's comments come months after Samsung released its “Galaxy AI” system for several Samsung phones in May. The system aims to streamline existing features, add new tools for users and improve the overall usability of Samsung phones.

Meanwhile, a few other market players have tried to create their own line of AI devices with their own unique form factors – though they haven't hit the mainstream yet.

When the Rabbit R1 launches in March 2024, it promises to feature an AI device where users can interact with it by voice and perform tasks on their behalf.

However, commentators such as prominent tech reviewer Marcus Brownlee have criticized it for its terrible battery life, calling it “borderline dysfunctional” and not very good at answering questions.

Brownlee described a similar product – Humane AI – as “the worst product I've ever reviewed”.

Apple, Samsung's biggest phone-making competitor, announced in June that it has partnered with OpenAI, a ChatGPT developer, to build the iPhone's AI features. Google is bringing AI to its smartphones and Android operating system.
