SEC Chairman Wishes Bitcoin Happy Birthday But Tells Crypto To Watch Its Action
The crypto community on Tuesday celebrated the 15th anniversary of Bitcoin's white paper, the world's first “peer-to-peer electronic currency.”
Among the celebrants is Gary Gensler – the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), famous for his strict enforcement actions against the crypto industry.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Gensler mentioned Satoshi Nakamoto — the anonymous author behind the Bitcoin white paper that remains a mystery to this day.
“If Satoshi Nakamoto went as Satoshi Nakamoto for Halloween, would we be able to tell?” he asked. “Happy 15th Anniversary to Satoshi's Famous White Paper That Started Crypto.”
Despite giving good words to Satoshi, Gensler is firm with modern crypto companies. “Any crypto companies that mislead investors should start treating them by complying with securities laws,” he said. Gensler has historically favored Bitcoin from a regulatory standpoint over other cryptos, recognizing it as a distinct commodity within the asset class. In contrast, he stated that “most” other cryptos, including Stablecoin, are unregistered securities and launched several lawsuits against both their issuers and the exchanges that list them. He has also been hesitant to approve the spot Bitcoin ETF, analysts believe that approval will help catapil the price of Bitcoin. Gensler's comments on Twitter attracted many who were upset by his behavior.
“I honestly think this is a very unprofessional tweet,” replied @osf_rekt. “There's a lot of emotion around Bitcoin right now and I can't believe that the chairman of the SEC, the body that makes the decisions, is posting garbage on social media like that.”
